Geography Intent and Implementation

The Geography curriculum at Cardinal Newman School aims to develop a fascination and wonder about the world, while equipping the children with knowledge about diverse people and places, alongside developing their understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes and their place within it.

Studying Geography helps our children make sense of the complex world in which they live, while developing their own sense of place. From early years to year 6, the children will experience a range of geographies, aimed at providing them with a firm foundation of understanding. A clear progression of knowledge, skills and experiences enable the children to progress and achieve their potential.

Children develop and use a range of skills, including:

  • Inquiry skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Communication skills
  • Fieldwork skills
  • Cartographic skills

First hand experiences are integrated across the curriculum, ranging from school grounds investigations, local area fieldwork, river trips and a fieldwork in France.

We want our children to be inquisitive and responsible citizens, with a sense of stewardship and an understanding of how their actions and choices impact the world around them, both at a local and a global scale. Teachers make meaningful links between geography and other subjects, to ensure cross curricular connections are made.
