Cardinal Newman Catholic Primary School Parent Portal - Issue

This week has been another exciting and hectic week in the life of the school. Year 5 have returned today from their three day trip to High Ashurst, where they have enjoyed all kinds of adventurous outdoor activities. Their verdicts on the best of these ranged from “zip wire” to “climbing wall” to “Leap of faith” but they were unanimous in their opinion that it was a “great” trip! Our thanks go to the staff and parents who supported this adventurous trip (in somewhat challenging weather conditions!). I think adults and children have all earned a long bath and a relaxing weekend ahead!

Red Class presented their first class assembly this week, at the end of a Mission Week which has focussed on the little things that the children can do to make a big difference. The children used big confident voices and sang beautifully, to the delight of their watching parents. It was good to see the transformation from their first whole school assembly back in September and the growth in confidence and maturity by the Summer Term! Well done Red Class! Well done too to the Green Class readers, who I sadly missed out of the newsletter last week – they had shared the super reading and Mass preparation for the Year 1 Mass and did a wonderful job! Thank you!

Year 3 have been blessed today with a visit from the charity “Children of the Eucharist” (COTE) who came to support with their preparation for First Holy Communion and to give the children an experience of meeting Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in a very intimate way. Both classes gathered in our chapel for guided sessions of reflection in front of the Holy Eucharist. Many of the children said they experienced great joy and peace in their hearts when praying in this way and all of them responded really positively to the experience. We hope to repeat it again, perhaps monthly, so that the children develop in their relationship with Jesus after they have made their First Holy Communion. Please keep our Year 3 children in your prayers – the first of them make their First Holy Communion this weekend and there will be many more weekends between now and the end of June when individual children will have this special celebration.

It was very noticeable as the COTE presenter went around the Year 3 classes, just how diverse our family backgrounds are. She encouraged the children to talk about where they and their families came from – there was a huge range from Nigeria to Hungary, from South Africa to Lithuania, from Australia to Ireland. You will have noticed that we are holding a Celebrating Difference Day at the beginning of next half term and it would be wonderful to have some input from parents with different backgrounds and cultures, so do please get in touch if you would be able to help us in the first week in June.
