13 September 2019

Thank you to all parents who attended the Partners in Learning meeting last night – the turnout was great and it was really lovely to see so many of you around school, looking in the classrooms and chatting to staff.  Parents who spoke to me said it was a very helpful and informative evening.  If you didn’t make it last night, do keep an eye on the website as we will aim to get slides and handouts on there as much as possible.  Thank you also to those who attended Mrs Sharp’s talk about RE at Cardinal Newman – the “Come and See” overview will be on the website and there is a parent newsletter coming out soon, so keep an eye out for that too!

Our Chair of Governors, Mrs Sarah Rice, presented the proposed hall extension plans at the meeting and governors were in the hall to answer questions.  As you know, the hall extension will cost around £500k, of which the school must fund £50k from the Governors' Fund.  The Governors' Fund is made up entirely of parent contributions and a huge thank you to those who already support this fund.  At present the fund cannot yet cover even half of the £50k required and so governors are seeking to increase the fund through further donations. If you have never got round to setting up the standing order, maybe now might be the time to do that.  Forms are available from the office and on our website (Standing Order - Gift Aid).  If you missed the presentation, the slides will also available on the website.

As mentioned last week, our Start of Year Mass and Family Picnic will take place on Sunday 22 September at 12:30.  The new Prayer Council will be inaugurated at that time and receive their badges from Fr Richard.  Before that time, we need to select some Prayer Council members!  In assembly this week, children in Years 3 – 6 were invited to apply to join the Prayer Council by writing me a letter explaining why they would like to take part.  Prayer Council members support the school with prayer and worship (eg organising activities for the younger children, leading prayer for other pupils, distributing ashes on Ash Wednesday), support the teachers with displays and maintenance of the Prayer Garden and also lead on fundraising and service activities such as the Operation Christmas Child Appeal and Sal’s Shoes initiatives.  Those who are already Prayer Council members are warmly encouraged to reapply and new members are most welcome.  Letters should reach me by the end of the day on Monday if possible.

Further to our email this week, just to reiterate that all scooters should be parked by the rainbow fence on the right as you come through the playground gate and no child (or adult!) should be using a scooter in the playground.  This is for Health and Safety reasons as an adult was hurt during a collision with a scooter earlier in the week.  Thank you for your support in keeping our playground a safe place for everyone.

Finally, our first certificate of the new academic year.  Following a lot of behind the scenes work by Mrs Kareem (Music Lead) and our class teachers during the Summer Term - we are proud to have been awarded the Music Mark for our Music provision in school.  We are delighted to have achieved this and look forward to continuing to improve our Creative Arts provision throughout the coming terms

All best wishes for the weekend.  Let’s hope the sunshine stays with us!

With best wishes

Catherine Burnham

PE KIT/EARRINGS
Please can children have their PE kit in school every day.  Please remember that children cannot wear earrings during PE lessons - if they cannot remove them themselves they must be taken off at home before school.  Thank you.

CLASS SUNDRIES PAYMENT
The sundries payment is now available to pay on your Scopay account.  This covers items the class may use for activities during the school year, for example cooking ingredients.

ACHIEVEMENTS BOARD
We have started our Achievements Board for the new school year.  If you would like to celebrate your child's achievement from outside school just send in a photo with a short description to the school office.  Thank you.

BOXES OF TISSUES
We would be very grateful for any donations of boxes of tissues for children to use in the office and classrooms.  Thank you.

Please find the autumn term newsletter.

PRIESTS' SIGNATURES FOR SCHOOL FORMS
Primary and Secondary school forms for St Erconwald's parishioners that need to be signed by either Fr Bill or Fr Richard should be taken to the Parish Office. If they are received by Thursday, they should be ready to be collected on the Sunday after mass from the Sacristy. Please do not hesitate contacting the Parish Office on 01932 221101 if you have any queries. Thank you.

PARKING
A neighbour has complained this week about parking in and around Kenilworth Drive.  Cars are being parked on the corner, on double yellow lines, on the pavement as well as blocking access for waste collection lorries.  Please can we ask parents once again to park safely and with consideration for our neighbours.  A reminder that free parking permits for Hersham station car park are available via the school office.  Thank you.

ALDI SPORTS KIT STICKERS
A reminder that we are collecting the Aldi Sports Kit stickers.  Please bring any you have to the school office.  Thank you!

WALTON AND HERSHAM FOODBANK
Thank you to everyone who supported our collection in the last week of the summer term.  We were able to deliver nearly 30kg of food to the Foodbank to support families over the summer.  St Erconwald's church currently has a collection box in the porch if you would like to donate.

WALTON FIRE STATION OPEN DAY - SATURDAY 15 SEPTEMBER
Walton Fire Station will be open to the public tomorrow from 12 noon to 4pm.  The day includes displays and demonstrations as well as activities for children and refreshments.

SJB SCHOOL 50TH ANNIVERSARY
SJB is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a special day on Saturday 21 September - please see here for the full programme of events.

SUNFLOWERS
We hope children enjoyed growing their sunflowers over the summer from the seeds kindly donated by Savills Estate Agents.  Here are George and Sofia in Blue Class with theirs.  If anyone else would like to send a photo to the office at office@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk, we can put them in a gallery.

PA NEWS
There are two PA fundraising projects this term:

EcoKids Recycling: In June we raised £229.90 from your clothes donations. We are hoping to match that again this term with our next collection on Thursday 7 November. We are giving you plenty of notice so that you can start collecting now. The EcoKids bags will be distributed before half term.

Christmas Cards: This is a great opportunity for your child/children and family to create your own personalised Christmas cards. You can do as many as you like. The design forms will be distributed no later than Monday 7 October and will include instructions for how to design your cards and place your order.

PRAYER INTENTIONS
Please remember in your prayers this week:

All those who are starting new schools and universities this month
All who are unwell at this time and those who care for them
All who live alone

If you would like to have a prayer intention included in the newsletter – for yourself or someone else (either by name or a general one as above), please email the office.  Please ensure you have the permission of the person/people you would like us to pray for if it isn’t for yourself.

Collective Worship:

Theme of the Week: Lead Kindly Light
