Celebration of Cardinal Newman’s Canonisation - Sunday 13 October

Over the coming month and through the year, we have many exciting activities to celebrate Cardinal Newman’s elevation to sainthood (St John Henry Newman) which is a very important event in the life of our school and indeed in the Catholic Church in England.  Many of the activities are open to parents to be involved in and we warmly welcome your support for the children and for the school.

1 October to 11 October
Novena of Prayer for the Canonisation of John Henry Newman.  Children will be taking part in their classes and parents are invited to pray the Novena at home or to join us in school at 8:45am in the chapel each morning.  This is an international initiative of prayer in the lead up to the canonisation.

Thursday 3 October
Bishop Richard will visit our school to celebrate a whole school Mass in thanksgiving for the Canonisation of John Henry Newman.  He will also bless our chapel and parents are invited to join us for the blessing and for tea in the hall afterwards.

Wednesday 9 October - Feast Day of Cardinal Newman
On this day we will be joining our prayers with those of all the Cardinal Newman schools and Oratories around the country.  The children will enjoy a day of spiritual reflection on John Henry Newman’s life and work and we will end the day with a class party in each class.  Please look out for requests for party foods for this special occasion!

Friday 11 October to Monday 14 October - Pilgrimage to the Canonisation in Rome
Four children and two members of staff will be among the representatives of our diocese at the Canonisation Mass in St Peter’s Square.  Please pray for the success of our trip and that we may faithfully carry out the legacy of St John Henry Newman in our school community.

Wednesday 16 October and half-termly thereafter
Following in the footsteps of Cardinal Newman, staff are undertaking a spiritual journey.  John Henry Newman wrote “I want an intelligent, well-instructed laity I wish you to enlarge your knowledge, to cultivate your reason, to get an insight into the relation of truth to truth, to learn to view things as they are, to understand how faith and reason stand to each other, what are the bases and principles of Catholicism” . During our spiritual journey we will be exploring different elements of our Catholic faith, beginning with “What do Catholics believe about Creation.”

Friday 25 October
Whole school trip planned to mark the canonisation with the children in a fun way.  Look out for more details coming soon.  Plenty of parent volunteers will be needed, so please consider whether you might be able to join us.  Watch this space…

And finally…

It has been suggested that we might form a school group of families and staff to join the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes (France) in July 2020.  The dates have not yet been released but will be in July and after the school term ends.  More information to follow.
