11 October 2019

Happy feast day of Cardinal Newman from Wednesday!  Certainly the children had a very exciting day, both completing activities relating to John Henry Newman and his impending canonisation, but also celebrating the feast day with sweets and treats!  Thank you for your generosity in sending in some goodies for the children to enjoy – all that I spoke to had a great time!

In our Feast Day liturgy on Wednesday, I showed the children a relic of John Henry Newman (his hair) which has been given to the school.  These relics are quite rare and we are very lucky to have one of our very own – Fr Richard has kindly donated a reliquary to house the relic and it has pride of place in our newly-blessed chapel.  Parents are most welcome to use the chapel at pick up or drop off times as a place of quiet prayer and reflection – just sign in at the office as usual.  As Bishop Richard said at the blessing last week, we are truly blessed to have a space dedicated to prayer in the heart of our school.

During our liturgy, we also showed the children a lovely video of the Cardinal Newman schools around the country.  It’s very short but interweaves John Henry Newman’s most famous writing with pictures of the work of his school today.  We are delighted to have taken part!

We are also privileged to be sending a delegation to Rome this weekend to participate in the Mass of Canonisation of Cardinal Newman.  As representatives of the school community and of our whole diocese, we are a group of 11 including 4 pupils and their parents, myself, Mr Flower and Fr Bill.  We are very much looking forward to our pilgrimage and we will pray for the intentions of Cardinal Newman’s school and our community while we were there.  If you would like to be with us in spirit, there will be live coverage of the Mass online on EWTN.

Thank you to all of you who have volunteered to support our whole school trip to Legoland on the last day of this half-term – we are delighted to have had such a great response and only sorry that we can’t take everyone who volunteered!  The children are extremely excited about the trip and we are looking forward to celebrating together at Legoland as a whole school community – children, staff and parents together!  What an exciting way of marking the special event of the canonisation!

Have a great weekend.
