This week in school, the children had the opportunity to enjoy a delicious celebration meal on Monday and they were lucky to have Alan and Ava’s mum come in to talk to them about Chinese culture.  This fitted well with Reception’s “Celebrations” topic and also helped the children across the school to understand something about celebrations in different parts of the world.  We also welcome parents who are able to support our curriculum through sharing their knowledge and experience.  Please let the office know if you think you could support in this way.

As we prepare for Mental Health Awareness Week next week, Topaz Class have used their Mission Week to raise awareness about emotions through the book “Lucy’s Blue Day.”  Mrs Mears has organised for the author to visit us later in term to share his books with the children, but you can also buy them here at a discounted price.  www.lucysblueday.com  (Discount details below)

This weekend, children are being encouraged to “Find their Brave” and develop their resilience for challenging situations.  Mental health was a key topic for our Coffee and Conversation last week and you can find the minutes of that meeting here

Network Rail have asked us to share a railway safety video with our Key Stage 2 children in preparation for the school holidays when they often see a spike in problems with children trespassing on the train tracks.  Given our school’s proximity to the railway, we felt it is important that we share this as we usually do at this time of year, but we are very aware that many families and staff were affected by the tragic death last summer.  Rather than make a blanket provision for all KS2 children, where we are aware that some will have been more affected than others, we have decided to share the link with parents this year and give the option to show it to your child or not.  The link is: https://learnliveuk.com/network-rail-primary-school-safety-talk/

Congratulations and thank you to all the children who have represented Cardinal Newman School at sports this week.  All of Coral Class Y4 took part in Mini-Olympics against other schools today, coming second in the tournament overall. Well done Coral class!  Earlier in the week some children from Y5 competed at Badminton and some from Y5 and Y6 played Netball against other schools .  It is always difficult to achieve a balance between selecting talented players and encouraging all children to take part, but we aim to enable every child to represent their school at sports during their time at Cardinal Newman.  We are also increasing the amount of competitive sport we play through inter-house competitions and the children are enjoying the challenge of Travel to Tokyo to maintain their fitness levels through a variety of sporting activities.  Keep logging all your great activities! https://www.getset.co.uk/travel-tokyo/nonreg

Thank you also to our school choir who represented the school at Canon Brendan MacCarthy’s funeral today.  They sang the Farewell Song “May the Choirs of Angels Come to Greet You” very beautifully and there was hardly a dry eye in the church.  Fr Brendan loved music and would have been very proud of them.  Please remember him in your prayers and pray for the repose of his soul.

All best wishes for the weekend.

Wellbeing

Zones of Regulation - This is an approach to help children self regulate their emotions and therefore have greater self control.

This is being rolled out throughout the school for Children’s Mental Health Week WB 3rd February 2020. The aim at this stage is for children to know the 4 different colours and  which feeling words are associated with each colour. We thought it would be helpful for parents to know a little more about this resource. Information on Zones of Regulation can be found on the Well-being area of the school Website here
