Catholic Life

Family Prayer Session

Please join us for our Family Prayer Session, which takes place every Friday morning from 8:15-8:30am in the school chapel. The aim is for families to gather and pray the Rosary, the session is led by parents and all are welcome - please bring your children.

Feast Day of St John Henry Newman

We celebrated our school Feast day on Wednesday with the celebration of Mass in the morning followed by an afternoon of activities about the life of St John Henry Newman.  We gathered together in the afternoon for us to hear from children across the school about what they had learnt.  This year we particularly focussed on being a 'link in a chain' from the words of St John Henry Newman's prayer.  The day concluded with a celebratory ice-lolly!

If you'd like to find out more about St John Henry Newman, there are some good resources here: Feast of St John Henry Newman - Mission Together

Rosary led by the Prayer Council

On Wednesday and Thursday for the remainder of October, the Prayer Council will lead us in a decade of the rosary before school.

We'd love to see lots of our families joining us, bring your own beads or we can lend you some. Meet on the KS1 playground under the canopy at 8.30am. You can find some lovely child-friendly resources for praying the rosary here: The Mission Rosary - Mission Together

Prayer Council

We are delighted to welcome the new Year 4 members to our Prayer Council this year, we are now 43 in total! This is so inspiring for the younger children to see such commitment. We thank you for the service you will give this year.

News/notes

Internet Safety Meeting

Wednesday 16th October at 6pm

Whatever devices your child is currently using it is always imperative to know what actions to take to ensure their safety online.

We are very pleased to welcome Sharon Girling back to Cardinal Newman to host a session for parents on Wednesday 16th October at 6pm in the school hall.

Sharon Girling OBE is a former police officer who retired from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) following thirty years’ service.  She was at the forefront of a national and international response to online child abuse and developed the processes and procedures that led to the creation of CEOP.  She is currently conducting training programmes for schools, law enforcement and businesses both nationally and internationally.  Sharon has been awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen for her services to policing.

I cannot stress enough how informative Sharon Girling’s presentation is and the number of quick fixes she suggests which instantly serve to protect your children online. Parents who have attended previously comment that they are so glad they came and can’t understand why more parents haven’t taken up the opportunity.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Wednesday.

Gerry Flower

Message from the Governors

Dear All,

Wednesday marked the Feast Day of Saint John Henry Newman, our patron and inspiration, whose teachings underpin our school’s ethos and values.

Newman lived from 1801 - 1890 and was a great thinker, writer and educator before being canonized by Pope Francis on 13 October 2019.  He was deeply committed to education: to the provision of spiritual and pastoral care as well as academic excellence.

He introduced the idea that we are all “links in a chain”.  Though individuals, we are defined by our community; how we behave and what we think, say and do will have an impact on others.

He also held the notion that God created every individual intentionally and has blessed us with a unique set of gifts and talents that he wants us to use for “some definite service”.

Cardinal Newman Catholic Primary School is a community of learners, believers and friends seeking to enable all our children to develop their potential in the knowledge that they are uniquely created and loved by God.

You are all links in the chain in our school community and your actions can strengthen these links for the benefit of all our children.  One of the ways you can do this is through regular donations to the Cardinal Newman School Governors’ Fund.  Please see the attached information about why your donations are so important and how you can donate.  Our objective is for 100% of families who can afford to contribute regularly to do so.

To those in our community who already contribute towards the Governors’ Fund, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude.  Although we are not able to thank you all personally, know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

God bless,

The Cardinal Newman School Governors

Governors’ Fund classroom iPad appeal – thank you!

Thank you very much to everyone who contributes to the Governors’ Fund.  We are blessed to have many long-standing contributors within the Cardinal Newman community and we are delighted this year to have welcomed many new contributors.

We have been able to support the school and enrich the children's learning with your generous contributions in many ways including 30 new 10th generation iPads (along with anti-shock cases for protection).

The assistance of the whole Cardinal Newman community is crucial in helping us to continue to offer all of our students an exciting Cardinal Newman education. Many families choose to give a regular monthly gift; some families make ad hoc donations and we are extremely grateful for all contributions.

We would love to increase our regular donors and would be extremely grateful for any donations you feel able to give, which you can make easily online here.

Thank you for your support.

Parking on Arch Road

Please can we remind parents to avoid parking and driving on Arch Road in the mornings before school and in the afternoons after school. It gets very congested and can make it dangerous for our children when they are walking into school. Please also be considerate of residents and do not block their driveways.

Parking is available in the Coronation Rec car park which is just a short walk away from school. Alternatively, you can park for free at Hersham station car park on Walton Park with a permit which you can obtain by emailing the school office your car registration plate.

Please also note that parents dropping their children off for Breakfast Club or any morning clubs are not allowed to park in the school car park.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

National Sleep Helpline: We are here to help

At any given time up to 40% of adults and 50% of children (this rises to 80% with a SEND diagnosis) have difficulties with their sleep. Yet in a recent survey, almost 60% of adults felt there was a lack of support for sleep issues. Sleep problems can leave people feeling isolated and lonely.

Our free helpline is run by trained sleep advisors, many of whom are specialists in working with SEND. We can talk to young people directly, or parents (we can also talk to adults, including older people, about their sleep issues).

The helpline is open 5 times a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7-9pm, and Monday, Wednesday mornings 9-11am. The number is 03303 530 541.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
