18th July, 2025

Dear Parents and Guardians

Just a final note to say a HUGE thank you from me for all your support over the last 8 years!  It has been a joy and a privilege to lead this community and serve your children as headteacher at Cardinal Newman and then as executive headteacher within the Xavier Catholic Education Trust.

A special thank you to all who have sent me individual letters, cards and gifts - you are so kind and I really appreciate you sharing your happy memories.  The Parent Association "rainbow flowers" are truly stunning and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the children's (and adults') notes in the wonderful book you gave me.    Thank you too to the Parent Prayer Group for the beautiful olive wood statue of the holy family - I will treasure it.

Cardinal Newman was a fantastic school when I joined it and I have done my best to leave it in an even better place.  I was blessed to be headteacher of a Cardinal Newman school when St John Henry Newman was canonised and enjoyed representing the school at the Vatican, along with pupils and parents from the school in 2019. I am delighted to have inaugurated the Chapel, where we now have the Blessed Sacrament reserved for private prayer and adoration.  More than all of this, I have been so blessed to work with your wonderful children, helping them to fulfil their potential, to know that they are each uniquely created and loved by God and that God has a special plan for each of them.  I will keep them and all of you in my prayers as I move on to my new role.

Thank you for everything and God bless

Catherine Burnham

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

As we reach the last day of term and come towards the end of another year, I would like to thank you for all your care, help, understanding and support during what has been a very positive and productive year at Cardinal Newman.

We are blessed with enthusiastic children, supportive parents, insightful governors and dedicated school staff who form such a special community, which enables great things to happen.

We have a great deal to celebrate this year!

Academic

We are not defined as a school by our academic results; however, the children have worked so hard this year and it is only right to celebrate their successes.

Phonics: Excellent phonics results in year 1, where 90% of our children reached the expected standard.

Y6 SATs

Our Year 6 results demonstrate years of building on solid foundations, which culminates in their final year.

‘The school has put in place a curriculum that is rich and ambitious for all pupils. This begins in Reception, where children get off to a strong start to their education. In English and mathematics, the school has meticulously planned pupils’ curriculum ‘pathways’ from early years through to Year 6. Along with high-quality teaching, this enables pupils to excel in these subjects.’

Prayer and Liturgy

The prayer and liturgy of the school continued to blossom this year. Our children are continuing to lead aspects of collective worship and they participate beautifully with the singing of hymns. Every child has participated reverently in whole school Mass and their understanding continues to grow. Children in Year 3 upwards have had the opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration in our school chapel throughout the academic year. Our Year 6 Prayer Council have started and completed the Faith in Action award, the second time this award has been offered at Cardinal Newman.

Saying Goodbye

It is at this time of the year that we prepare to say goodbye to Year 6 and we wish them all the very best for the future. I urge the children to remember their time at Cardinal Newman as Learners, Believers and Friends. To those families who are now leaving Cardinal Newman, please do stay in contact and let us know what the future brings.

As we say our goodbyes to Catherine Burnham and Emma Sharp, I would like to thank them for the huge contributions they have made in the educational provision and Catholic Life at Cardinal Newman school during their time here. We will keep them in our prayers as we wish them all the best with their new adventures.

We would also like to say a big thank you to our out-going chairs of the PA: Jen Rutzler, Emily Wilson, Hannah Mahood & Manuela De Castro for the amazing contribution towards all the PA fundraising over the year, as well as all the organisation this requires.

We are incredibly appreciative of all the support we receive from all our community, whether that be volunteering for trips, making financial contributions, sending appreciative emails of thanks, helping out with PA events, hearing readers…. Thank you for all you have done to support our school this year. We wish you a very happy summer holiday.

Best Wishes

Gerry Flower

Parking

We have had a recent complaint about parents parking on Colne Drive. Please can you park considerately when collecting and dropping off your children.

Parking is available in the Coronation Rec car park which is just a short walk away from school. Alternatively, you can park for free at Hersham station car park on Walton Park with a permit which you can obtain by emailing the school office your car registration plate.

Please also note that parents dropping their children off for Breakfast Club or any morning clubs are not allowed to park in the school car park.

Message from the Governors

Dear all,

We wanted to update you on how we next plan to use the money from your donations to the Governors’ Fund to help our school.

We have now funded the purchase of five new interactive whiteboards for the school, which have replaced existing models in KS1 and KS2 classrooms that were unfortunately reaching the end of their natural life.  Here is one of the new whiteboards pictured in situ.

Keeping these integral educational tools up to date is hugely important and will significantly enhance the children’s learning and support class teachers in their teaching.

Thank you for your generosity and for being such an important part of the Cardinal Newman community.  We will continue to keep you updated with how your donations are being used to help support our school.

If you don’t already give to the Governors’ Fund, may we ask that you consider it for 2025? You can donate to the Governors’ Fund here.

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

National Sleep Helpline: We are here to help

At any given time up to 40% of adults and 50% of children (this rises to 80% with a SEND diagnosis) have difficulties with their sleep. Yet in a recent survey, almost 60% of adults felt there was a lack of support for sleep issues. Sleep problems can leave people feeling isolated and lonely.

Our free helpline is run by trained sleep advisors, many of whom are specialists in working with SEND. We can talk to young people directly, or parents (we can also talk to adults, including older people, about their sleep issues).

The helpline is open 5 times a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7-9pm, and Monday, Wednesday mornings 9-11am. The number is 03303 530 541.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
