16th September, 2022

Good Afternoon,

Family Mass – Sunday 18th September

Our Start of Year Family Mass is this Sunday at 12noon in the school grounds (or in the hall if wet – hopefully not!)  All are welcome to join us for Mass and for a picnic in the grounds afterwards – please bring lunch for your family!  Our Prayer Council will be commissioned at this Mass and all of our children who made their First Holy Communion over the summer have been invited to process with Fr Richard at the beginning of Mass.  We are looking forward to a lovely celebration of our school community – do come along!

Art Exhibition – 21st – 26th September

Cardinal Newman Catholic Primary School are hosting our own Art Exhibition at the Riverhouse Barn next week.  The exhibition will be open 10am to 4pm from Wednesday 21st September until Sunday 26th September – every child who was in our school last summer will have their work exhibited!  The children have produced portraits in different styles. Do bring your children along to see their work and celebrate their artistic achievements!

Y1 Parents – Thank you!

A big shout out to Mrs Reeve and the Year 1 parents who really showed the best of our Community of Learners, Believers and Friends this summer, by supporting one of our families with a new baby – they provided meals on a rota for the family and really ensured they felt loved and cared for at this important time!  Well done and thank you.

Open Evening – Wednesday 28th September 5-7pm

We are holding our first ever open evening in ten days’ time to encourage prospective Reception parents to visit our fantastic school.  We have always been an over-subscribed school, but with falling birth rates in Elmbridge, it is important that we maintain our strong pupil numbers through the next few years.

There is sometimes a perception that Cardinal Newman is only for Catholic children – we know that this is not the case and there are many in our community of different faiths or none.  Our oversubscription criteria will continue to give children from our parishes the first priority, but it is important for us to share the message that we welcome children of all faiths or none at Cardinal Newman.

We will be inviting some of the older children to help out with activities during the evening.

Earrings

Many children have had their ears pierced over the summer holidays.  Thank you to all those who followed the guidance to have them pierced at the beginning of the holidays, so that children would be able to continue to access their curriculum right to PE in school from September.

Children cannot wear earrings during PE due to insurance regulations – it is now known not to be safe.  Ideally children should learn to remove and / or replace their earrings for PE lessons; if this is not possible, earrings should not be worn on PE days please.  If you have any queries about this, please speak to Mr Flower or Mrs Burnham.

Thank you for supporting your children to access their PE curriculum safely.

Parking

Free parking permits are available for Hersham Station car park and parents are encouraged to park at the station and walk through the pedestrian tunnel to school.  Please email the office  with your name, address and car reg number.

Free parking is also available at Coronation Recreation Ground which offers a short, traffic-free walk to school.

School parking on Arch Road is not permitted – please respect the local residents and don’t drive down Arch Rd.

Families with exceptional circumstances causing a specific need to drop off onsite are asked to contact Mrs Burnham to arrange use of the staff car park.

Many thanks for your support with this.

Have a lovely long weekend.

All the best,

Mrs. Burnham

Building Learning Power (BLP) Competition

Can you design a character for one of the 5 Learning Powers?

In school, we use Building Learning Power (BLP) to teach good learning strategies. There are four key learning powers – resilience, resourcefulness, reflectiveness and relationships, with the addition of risk taking.  We believe that it is important to equip and support our children to become good, happy and successful learners.

Competition:

We would like children to design characters to represent each of the learning powers at home. We would like these designs to be done on the computer.  (If you don’t have access to a computer, you can draw your character on paper.)  The winning designs for each character will be used throughout the school.

These are the characteristics of each learning power.

Resilience: not giving up,

Resourcefulness: being able to use a range of learning strategies and knowing what to do when you get stuck

Reflectiveness: being able to think about yourself as a learner and how you might be able to do this better

Relationships: being able to learn with and from others as well as on your own

Risk Taking: being able to have a go – you are ready and willing to try something new.

Closing date: Tuesday 27th September

We look forward to displaying our new learning power characters.

Contacting your teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in their reading/homework diary, eg. homework issues, pick up arrangements, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know. For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Pick-up notes - new system!

If possible, please write pick-up notes in your child's reading/homework book or give them a note to pass onto the teacher.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible. If you do email the office about a pick-up, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply but we will of course pass the message on. This is due to the large  volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily. Thank you for understanding.

Report your child's absence

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you do email the office about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply but we will of course pass the message on. eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
