19th July, 2024

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

As we reach the last few days of term and come towards the end of another year, I would like to thank you for all your care, help, understanding and support during what has been a very positive and productive year at Cardinal Newman.

We are blessed with enthusiastic children, supportive parents, insightful governors and dedicated school staff who form such a special community, which enables great things to happen. I would like to thank the PA for their tireless efforts raising funds this year for the school, totalling an amazing £23,833.64.

We have a great deal to celebrate this year!

Academic

We are not defined as a school by our academic results, however the children have worked so hard this year and it is only right to celebrate their successes.

Phonics: Outstanding phonics results in year 1, where 97% of our children reached the expected standard.

Y6 SATs

Our Year 6 results demonstrate years of building on solid foundations, which culminates in their final year.

The Reading statistic is especially rewarding for us as a school. It is always a target for all staff -that all children leave Cardinal Newman having reached the expected standard. We have focussed on developing our teaching of reading over recent years, which has contributed to this outstanding result. Ofsted recognised the strength of the reading provision at Cardinal Newman in their recent inspection:

‘The school has put in place a curriculum that is rich and ambitious for all pupils. This begins in Reception, where children get off to a strong start to their education. In English and mathematics, the school has meticulously planned pupils’ curriculum ‘pathways’ from early years through to Year 6. Along with high-quality teaching, this enables pupils to excel in these subjects.’

Ofsted March 2024

‘Pupils benefit from a high-quality phonics programme and effective teaching. This begins in Reception, where children get off to a flying start in learning to read. Swift support is put in place to address any emerging gaps in learning. Almost all pupils quickly learn to read, and they enjoy reading. Pupils get to know many high-quality texts. This contributes well to their understanding and acquisition of vocabulary.’

Broad and Balanced Curriculum

At open mornings, we are very keen to set out that our aim is for all our children to have the opportunity to excel in a range of different activities. Here are a few of the highlights from this year:

  • Riverhouse Barn Art Gallery – every child in school publicly displayed their artwork and had the chance to take their family to view it
  • Royal Academy Portrait competition (resulting in children having their work displayed at the Royal Academy of Art this summer)
  • Year 4 classes performed in public in a combined choir at Dorking Halls
  • Year 5 classes performed very confidently at Elmbridge Music Festival
  • Year 6 Prayer Council attended Mass at Arundel Cathedral and visited the Birmingham Oratory
  • School Council visited Houses of Parliament and Downing Street
  • School Productions in all year groups, including Y6 Darwin Rocks, Y2 Florence Nightingale and Y4 Romans
  • Year 6 Boys Football Team won the Royal Holloway tournament
  • Year 5 Boys Football Team won the League
  • Year 5/6 Girls Football Team won the League Cup
  • Year 2 Football Team won the St Georges tournament
  • Panathlon Team won the local area competition and competed at county level
  • KS2 children competed at District Sports, demonstrating excellent team spirit and support for each other and gaining 4th position
  • KS2 children competed in the Sports Hall Athletics competition and gained 3rd place
  • Ten Y6 children competed in the National 11-14 Maths Challenge
  • Whole School Science Fair for all year groups with winners participating in a Xavier Trust Science Fair at ACS in Cobham
  • “Aim High” workshops for the local area were hosted at Cardinal Newman for children to fulfil their potential in Writing, Maths and Science

‘Pupils benefit from the many and varied extra-curricular activities and clubs on offer. Musical performances and other special events enable pupils to showcase their talents. Every pupil is encouraged to ‘shine’ in their own unique way’. Ofsted March 2024

Prayer and Liturgy

The prayer and liturgy of the school continued to blossom this year. Our children are continuing to lead some aspects of collective worship and they participate beautifully with the singing of hymns. Every child has participated reverently in whole school Mass and their understanding continues to grow. Children in Year 3 upwards have had the opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration in our school chapel throughout the academic year. Our Year 6 Prayer Council have started and completed the Faith in Action award, the first time this award has been offered at Cardinal Newman.

It is at this time of the year that we prepare to say goodbye to Year 6 and we wish them all the very best for the future. I urge the children to remember a quote from the Year 6 production in whatever they go on to do, make sure that ‘you remain true to yourself’. To those families who are now leaving Cardinal Newman, please do stay in contact and let us know what the future brings.

We are incredibly appreciative of all the support we receive from all of our community, whether that be volunteering for trips, making financial contributions, sending appreciative emails of thanks, helping out with PA events, hearing readers or donating trees…. Thank you for all you have done to support our school this year. We wish you a very happy summer holiday.

Best Wishes

Gerry Flower

Governors’ Fund classroom iPad appeal – thank you!

Thank you very much to everyone who contributes to the Governors’ Fund.  We are blessed to have many long-standing contributors within the Cardinal Newman community and we are delighted this year to have welcomed many new contributors.

Our focus for most of this academic year has been on fundraising to purchase 30 new 10th generation iPads (together with anti-shock cases for protection) and we are delighted to announce that these have been purchased!  Thanks to your generosity, children throughout the school will now be able to use these iPads on a 1:1 basis in their classrooms to enrich their learning.

The assistance of the whole Cardinal Newman community is crucial in helping us to continue to offer all of our students an exciting Cardinal Newman education. Many families choose to give a regular monthly gift; some families make ad hoc donations and we are extremely grateful for all contributions.

We would love to increase our regular donors and would be extremely grateful for any donations you feel able to give, which you can make easily online here.

Thank you for your support.

News/notes

Earrings

If you are planning for your child to have their ears pierced over the summer holidays, please make it as early in the holiday as possible.  Children are not able to do PE in school if they cannot remove their earrings.  If worn for school, earrings should only be small studs, one in each ear.  Thank you for your support with this.

New Pencil cases

In recent years we have requested that children in Key Stage 2 have a clear pencil case. The reason for this is to eliminate any possible distraction while the children are completing work. This year we have made the decision to provide all key stage 2 children with a pencil case. The pencil case is a heavy duty 'Tuff Bag ' pencil case size ( 33cm X 13 cm). The children have been shown the pencil cases today during a visit to their new classes for Story Time. The children will receive their pencil case on the first school day in September- please could you send their equipment in an alternative e.g. a sandwich bag on that day. The children will bring the pencil case to and from school as normal. Thank you for your understanding.

Uniform

Summer uniform may be worn during the summer term and for the month of September. From the 1st October, winter uniform should be worn. Smart black school shoes should be worn and hair accessories should be in school colours (Navy, red or white).  Our children always look very smart in their uniform – thank you for helping them to maintain this.

Faith in Action Awards

On Friday 12th July, children and families from the Surrey schools of our diocese gathered at Christ Prince of Peace Church in Weybridge for the Faith in Action awards.  This was the first year that children from Cardinal Newman have worked on the award.  It was a brilliant experience for the Year 6 Prayer Council who have been putting their 'faith into action' all year by serving and praying. The liturgy on Friday was celebrated by Bishop Richard and included the children being awarded with their badge.  We wish them every success and hope they take on the challenge of Bronze award next year.

Girls Football Win!

After a fantastically fruitful football season, the Cardinal Newman girls football team (which is currently the most populated it has been in ages!) lead the school to glory by winning the ERPSSA cup! They secured their success with a 1-0 win against Cleves! Well done to the entire football team, who all contributed to this amazing achievement! We're so proud of all your hard work, commitment and positive attitude. Thank you also to all of the parents/carers for your support.

A special mention goes out to Clodagh for an absolutely stunning display of football technique and utterly dependable defensive skills in the cup final game. Clodagh - you were the CN player of the match!

We look forward to an equally enjoyable season in September with some fresh faces. Best of luck to all our Year 6 girls with their future sporting endeavours.

National Online Safety: Wake Up Wednesday Guides for Parents

We would like to make you aware of our ‘online safety’ advice, guidance and support page called ‘Wake Up Wednesday - what parents / carers need to know’.

Wake Up Wednesday, created by The National College, aims to inform parents and carers on topics such as social media platforms, gaming, and IPad security. They include top tips, important reminders and reality checks on a wide range of online safety topics. They are a great resource to keep up to date with the issues children may encounter.

We will post relevant articles of interest that should help you and your child here on our website.

We thank you for your ongoing support in assuring the safety of our pupils online.

Eco Committee

We did it!  For the second year in a row the Eco Committe have achieved the Eco Schools Green Flag Award. A big thank you to the fantastic Eco Commitee who have given up their playtime every Tuesday to plan and carry out our action plan. I am so proud of them! However, we could not have done it without our whole school community.  Our children, staff and parents have all committed to our eco goals and worked together to carry out Pope Francis' Laudato Si, a commitment as Catholics to help protect and nurture our planet for all.

Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: ‘The Eco-Schools’ Green Flag is an international benchmark that demonstrates a commitment to fighting climate change and high standard of sustainable practice. Students and staff who earn this award deserve recognition for their dedication toward protecting our planet. Every day, they demonstrate that each of us can contribute to making our planet a better, more sustainable, place.’

To learn more about Eco-Schools head to www.eco-schools.org.uk

We will be back next year and I can't wait to start working towards our third green flag!

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

National Sleep Helpline: We are here to help

At any given time up to 40% of adults and 50% of children (this rises to 80% with a SEND diagnosis) have difficulties with their sleep. Yet in a recent survey, almost 60% of adults felt there was a lack of support for sleep issues. Sleep problems can leave people feeling isolated and lonely.

Our free helpline is run by trained sleep advisors, many of whom are specialists in working with SEND. We can talk to young people directly, or parents (we can also talk to adults, including older people, about their sleep issues).

The helpline is open 5 times a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7-9pm, and Monday, Wednesday mornings 9-11am. The number is 03303 530 541.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
