3rd February, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A few of you have asked us about the green screen around the KS1 playground frontage, so we thought perhaps it was worth saying briefly to everyone in case you've been wondering...  There hasn't been a specific incident which triggered putting up the green screen at the front.  We have had screening along the boundary with Coronation Recreation Ground for some time and now seemed the right time to extend this to the frontage.  The safety and security of our children is always our first priority.

To that end, please could we remind all parents that the use of mobile phones is not permitted on the playgrounds at drop off and pick up.  This helps us to keep all of our children safe.

Thank you

Catherine Burnham

Headteacher

ACS Cobham International School : Open Day : Saturday 18th March

Over recent years more and more local families are choosing an international education for their child.  At ACS International School Cobham we believe we offer a progressive wide ranging and attractive curriculum.  One which allows each child to stand out and not blend in.  We are a school which offers a diverse range of subject options as well as two different educational pathways with our International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement offerings.

With 60% of our students now going onto UK universities both of these programmes offer an alternative to the A Level programme.  It also prepares our students for university and beyond developing lifelong skills from our cross curricula approach.

We are broadly selective in terms of our admissions process with rolling admissions throughout the year but we don’t run an entrance exam programme which is very appealing to our parents reducing stress for our students.  We achieve excellent results year on year with our average IB points last year being 37 which is equivalent to 2 x A* and 1 x A at A Level.

Safer Internet Day

The 20th anniversary of Safer Internet Day is on Tuesday 7th February. Each year, Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns.  This year the theme is ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online".

In school we will be making space for conversations about life online in Key Stage assemblies and in our classrooms, so that we can hear about the issues most affecting children online and equip them with the best ways to deal with them.  The internet is amazing and has so much to offer children, but online safety skills are an increasingly important part of all our lives.

The Eikon Charity have partnered with Samsung and Internet Matters to create a free guide and free webinars that help parents and carers take simple steps towards keeping children safe online.  To register for the free webinars and download the guide visit https://eikon.org.uk/safer-internet-day/

Please find other helpful Internet Safety links on our website: https://www.cardinal-newman.surrey.sch.uk/curriculum/internet-safety

NEW!! Eco Committee ideas!

A member of the eco committee has come up with an amazing idea to share an eco tip on the newsletter each week. We hope this will raise awareness of what we are working on at school and try and get everyone involved in being more eco - friendly!

This term we are focusing on reducing our Energy consumption by turning off our whiteboards and class lights when we don't need them on. This got us wondering - what have we left on at home that could be switched off?

We would like your child to go around your house with an adult and find out which devices could be switched off to save electricity in your house! I wonder how much electricity you could save? Make sure children don't switch anything off without asking first and make sure that an adult is with them - plug sockets and switches can be dangerous.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
