Notes/Reminders

Book Week 27th March - 3rd March

Please be reminded that Book Week begins next week.  The children will engage in a variety of activities throughout the week (including meeting a published author!) and are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character on Thursday 2nd March.  Children are also able to enter the 'Potato Book Character' competition (entries due Wednesday 1st March) and we would love to have a collection of photos of our children being storytellers on our online Padlet https://padlet.com/CardinalNewman/childstoryteller).

Lenten lunch

A reminder that next Wednesday the whole school will be having a simple lunch as part of our Lenten commitment.  A choice of soup, a bread roll and a piece of fruit will be provided by the school kitchen for children that are booked in for the school lunch on Scopay that day.

Parking on Arch Road

Parking in the roads around the school can be very difficult and we ask parents not to park on Arch Road during school arrival and departure times. There is free parking at Coronation Recreation Ground with a short traffic free walk to the school.

An excellent way to avoid the congestion and park just a short walk from the school is to get a parking permit for the Hersham Station car park in Walton Park.  It's completely free and is valid for morning drop off and afternoon pick up times.

To apply for a parking permit, please email the office with your name, address and car registration number. These details will be forwarded to Elmbridge Borough Council who will then post the permit directly to your home address. Thank you for your co-operation.

ExpertEd Midweek maths Webinars

Year 5 and year 6 children are invited to take part in a series of webinars offered by ExpertEdLive, an evening online programme offering the opportunity to connect with expertise from across the UK and beyond. ‘Midweek Maths’ aims to stretch and challenge interested pupils in Years 5 & 6 and to encourage conversations about the subject between children and their parents. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend together with their child.

The series will be hosted live events. Each week will feature intriguing problems that encourage logical thinking and discussion of different approaches with input from specialist guests and the audience at home. Participants will also be able to submit their own questions to be answered by our expert guests and attempt takeaway questions with prizes awarded to the best answers.

Sessions will be delivered as Zoom webinars on the following dates:

Midweek Maths – 5 Wednesday evenings beginning 1st March 7.00-7.40pm

We would be delighted to have your interested son/daughter along with a parent to join us for these sessions. A brief trailer video and registration links are available on our website https://expertedlive.org/family/ (places are limited).

School Dinners

Please remember to book school dinners on Scopay at least 1 week in advance or ring the school office before 9am if you have left it too late to book/cancel online for that day.

Allergies

If your child has an allergy please make sure the school office is informed. Please check the menu carefully before booking lunch for your child.

Eco Committee

The Eco Committee took part in its first litter picking session this week due the fantastic new equipment donated to us by the PA. Many thanks to them. We are already making a real difference to our school grounds as you can see by our photos below. Due to our location we get a lot of rubbish blowing in from the nearby park which made us think of this week's eco-challenge!

Eco Challenge

Bins in public places can get very full and some of them do not enable recycling. If you are able, we would like you to take your rubbish home with you and dispose of it there. This means you will be able to recycle parts of it and help our public spaces stay clear from clutter!

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
