Notes/Reminders

Safe Driving for Our Children

Following several close calls on Arch Road where cars have intentionally mounted the pavement, please could parents note:

FACT:

Every month in the UK, 1200 children are injured in traffic-related collisions which happen within 500m of a school (DfT 2018)

FACT:
Rule 145: You MUST NOT drive on or over a pavement, footpath or bridleway except to gain lawful access to property, or in the case of an emergency.  (Highway Code 2015, based on Road Traffic Act 1988)

FACT:

41% of British schools exceed the air pollution levels deemed safe by WHO (Big Zero 2022)

Cardinal Newman Catholic Primary School ask all parents NOT to drive down Arch Road for any reason between 8:15 and 9:15am and between 2:30 and 3:30pm.  Safe free parking is available at Hersham Station (Permit available from school) and at Coronation Recreation Ground.  Please make use of these other options to keep our children safe on their way to and from school.

Family Easter Concert in Esher

I am a professional pianist living in Esher and putting on a family concert in the Easter holidays at Christ Church, Esher. I know that many of your families have attended and enjoyed my concerts in Esher historically.

The concert is the Tale of Sleeping Beauty narrated to Tchaikovsky’s Ballet Suite (arranged for piano duet and as used in the Story Orchestra book Sleeping Beauty) followed by interactive fun where bubbles will fly and children can join in a giant guessing-game around Bizet’s composition, Children’s Games.  The concert is recommended for 3+, is performed to visual images and tickets start at £8. Please see flyer here for more information.

The Wild Escape Project - Earth Day celebrations -From 3 April to 22 April

Alongside Local Surrey Libraries, and other Surrey Museums, Elmbridge Museum is taking part in The Wild Escape, a nationwide project to explore and have fun with nature and wildlife found in museum collections.

This project is funded by Art Fund, Arts Council England, WWF UK, the RSPB, National Trust and English Heritage.

During the Easter school holiday, they are inviting families to come along to local free drop-in craft sessions across Elmbridge to do fun crafts and help museums to create a community artwork for this project. Info at https://elmbridgemuseum.org.uk/events/wild-escape/

This project is culminating in a ‘Get Wild About Surrey’ Family Festival in Haslemere Museum on Earth Day 22nd April 2023 from 10am to 4pm. With free activities at 15 different museum, gallery and wildlife stalls making wildlife-inspired craft, listening to fascinating talks about Surrey wildlife, finding bat houses and bees and admiring the artworks created by Surrey children for an epic national collective artwork! Info at https://www.haslemeremuseum.co.uk/whatson/index.html

St Erconwald’s Easter initiative

We would love for the children ( any age ) to make an Easter card or draw a small picture to hang on the Easter tree that will be on display in St Erconwald’s Church foyer. We will distribute them during Easter week to parishioners in the community and at St. Peter’s and Walton Hospital. We would love to have the children and parents more involved in these initiatives. So please watch this space for more things to come! Thank you.

Eco Committee

This week we carried out our March energy spot check around the school. Well done to Amethyst as the most improved class and Sapphire, Coral and Red class for having lights and whiteboards switched off. As a committee we felt that many electrical devices were on that shouldn't be, so we have undertaken that the Eco committee will now be in charge of making sure the lights and whiteboards are off at breaktimes and lunchtimes if they don't need to be. Hopefully we can really improve our results next term!

Eco tip of the week

Did you know that just stopping a dripping tap is a great way to help the environment? We all need to reduce the amount of water we use as dirty water needs to be processed and cleaned which wastes a lot of energy. As a family try to reduce the amount of water you use, this will also help you save money! This could be as easy as taking shorter showers and turning the water tap off whilst you brush your teeth. Why not try putting a large bottle of tap water in the fridge to save waiting for the tap to run cold? Waiting for the tap to run cold can waste 10 litres of water a day!

Lost Property

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
