This project is funded by Art Fund, Arts Council England, WWF UK, the RSPB, National Trust and English Heritage.

During the Easter school holiday, they are inviting families to come along to local free drop-in craft sessions across Elmbridge to do fun crafts and help museums to create a community artwork for this project. Info at https://elmbridgemuseum.org.uk/events/wild-escape/

This project is culminating in a ‘Get Wild About Surrey’ Family Festival in Haslemere Museum on Earth Day 22nd April 2023 from 10am to 4pm. With free activities at 15 different museum, gallery and wildlife stalls making wildlife-inspired craft, listening to fascinating talks about Surrey wildlife, finding bat houses and bees and admiring the artworks created by Surrey children for an epic national collective artwork! We would love for the children ( any age ) to make an Easter card or draw a small picture to hang on the Easter tree that will be on display in St Erconwald’s Church foyer. We will distribute them during Easter week to parishioners in the community and at St. Peter’s and Walton Hospital. We would love to have the children and parents more involved in these initiatives. So please watch this space for more things to come! Thank you.

Eco Committee

Eco Committee

This week we have started our plastic stationary recycling initiative. Instead of throwing away old whiteboard pens, dried up felt tips and broken rulers we are collecting them up to be taken to the Elmbridge Eco Hub where they will be taken to be recycled. Recycling plastic stops us making more plastic and helps us to save fossil fuels and energy. Please take any unusable plastic stationary (from school or at home) to the Eco Committe display opposite Violet class and place in the yellow tub.

Eco tip of the week

Please check out what can actually go into your blue bin using the link below. We learnt this week that if too many bins are contaminated the whole lorry load will be sent to be incinerated rather than actually recycled. What a waste of resources and energy! Make sure you leave some space in your blue bin this week for all those left over easter egg cardboard boxes!

Summer Fair! Sunday 9th July

These have historically been great fundraisers and loads of fun for the kids and an opportunity for lots of memories to be made.  Running an event like this is wholly dependent on volunteers though so before we can commit to setting it up we need to gauge participation.

-  Can you/your partner commit an hour (or more) that day to help?

-  Do you run/know a local business that we could get involved? Face paint, bouncy castle, MYO craft etc . Please get in touch with the PA/class reps to let them know. Thank you for your support.

Now your child can join iRock too!

At iRock we believe every child deserves an opportunity to express themselves! Our in-school rock and pop band lessons provide an amazing confidence-boosting experience for children by making music fun!

Weekly iRock lessons help to unleash your child's confidence: playing in their very own band, learning their favourite songs, leading up to live concerts.

No musical experience is necessary

iRock provide all of the instruments

Your child can choose from drums, keyboard, lead electric guitar, bass guitar or vocals

iRock lessons are held during the school day

Our experienced band coaches will guide the band through every lesson

iRock runs from Reception through to Year 6

Bands are grouped by age

Children choose their band name and learn their favourite songs

Rehearsals build towards a concert at the end of each term

Included in iRock is a brand new music qualification that children can achieve without needing to take an exam

Click here https://www.irockschool.com/enrol to visit our website, type in the name of your school and register interest for your child to join iRock.

Lost Property

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
