21st April, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I have been contacted recently by our Lourdes Diocesan Pilgrimage Office with regard to volunteers to care for the sick in Lourdes this summer.  You may remember I wrote to you about this before.  There is unprecedented demand for pilgrimage to Lourdes for the sick and isolated in our diocese this year and the diocese faces turning away sick pilgrims if enough volunteers do not come forward.  Could you help out this year?

The annual pilgrimage is extremely well supported - last year's was the first since the pandemic and took around 650 people.  In a normal year, there may be 1000.  It is a very joyful event and greatly appreciated by the sick and isolated, as well as by those who volunteer to care for them.

The closing date for applications is NEXT WEEKEND - 30th April - and after that they will have to start turning people away.  If you feel able to help, funding for volunteers can be greatly subsidised (beyond the advertised subsidy) so do get in touch with them and they will help you to find a way forward.  There are three teachers and one governor going from Cardinal Newman this year - we will hope to see you there!

Do come and talk to me if you have any questions.  The information shared by the diocese, including the link for more info are below:

Applications from pilgrims requiring assistance to journey with the Diocese to Lourdes this summer are back to pre-Covid numbers – this is wonderful news, but it does mean we now need lots of helpers, nurses and HCAs to apply during April to make sure we have enough people to care for them in Lourdes. To make your application please click here.

The diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place 28 July to 3 August for those travelling by air, or 27 July to 4 August for those travelling by coach or jumbulance. The cost for Helpers and Clinicians is £680 (subsidised) or £850 full price. Find out more on the diocesan website.

Have a lovely weekend.

King Charles III's Coronation Celebrations

On Friday 5th May we will be celebrating in school with a whole school picnic (more information to follow.) Children are invited to put their creative skills into action and create their own crowns to wear for the picnic. Our School Council will have the opportunity to judge the different crowns and will be 'crowing' winners for each class. (Please speak to your child's class teacher if you would like any resources to help your child make their crown.)

As a school we will also be taking part in ' The Big Help Out' on Friday 12th May (more information to follow.) Starting on Monday 8th May, thousands of organisations across the country are getting together to give us all the chance to help out in our local communities to help mark His Majesty The King's Coronation.

We also wanted to inform you of a nationwide project that your child may like to take part in. To celebrate King Charles III's Coronation we are inviting children to take part in the BBC Children in Need Royally Big Portrait. Thousands of primary school children across the UK have been invited to draw their own portrait of the King. Each child's picture will then be combined to create one giant visual portrait of King Charles III. For your child to be part of this historic moment and for their artwork to be included in The Royally Big Portrait, all you have to do is upload their drawing online which is quick and easy to do.

  1. On a blank piece of white paper children will need to draw their portrait. They can only use black pen and must sign their first name or initials next to their drawing. (If you need a piece of plain paper for your child to draw their picture, please ask your child's class teacher.)
  2. Snap a photo of the portrait trying to ensure that the paper is as flat and non-creased as possible.
  3. Go to BBC Children in Need here where you'll find information on The Royally Big Portrait, as well as instructions to 'Upload Here' to upload your child's drawing through their easy to use webform.
  4. Portrait artist Sam Barnett will email you a link to the digital portrait when it has been created.
  5. The closing date for uploads is Friday 28th April. Any portraits that are uploaded after this date will not be included.

Coronation Picnic Friday 5th May

On Friday 5th May there will be a special lunch menu to celebrate the Coronation. If your child is having a school lunch on this day please select option 1 or option 2 in Scopay , there will be no option 3 on this day. The only difference between the options is option1 contains a ham sandwich and option 2 will be vegetarian.

If you would like your child to take part in the picnic please make sure they are signed up on Scopay by Tuesday 25th April.

Summer Ball!

Summer Fair - Sunday 9th July

These have historically been great fundraisers and loads of fun for the kids and an opportunity for lots of memories to be made.  Running an event like this is wholly dependent on volunteers though so before we can commit to setting it up we need to gauge participation.

-  Can you/your partner commit an hour (or more) that day to help?

-  Do you run/know a local business that we could get involved? Face paint, bouncy castle, MYO craft etc . Please get in touch with the PA/class reps to let them know. Thank you for your support.

Weekly iRock lessons help to unleash your child's confidence: playing in their very own band, learning their favourite songs, leading up to live concerts.

No musical experience is necessary

iRock provide all of the instruments

Your child can choose from drums, keyboard, lead electric guitar, bass guitar or vocals

iRock lessons are held during the school day

Our experienced band coaches will guide the band through every lesson

iRock runs from Reception through to Year 6

Bands are grouped by age

Children choose their band name and learn their favourite songs

Rehearsals build towards a concert at the end of each term

Included in iRock is a brand new music qualification that children can achieve without needing to take an exam

Click here https://www.irockschool.com/enrol to visit our website, type in the name of your school and register interest for your child to join iRock.

Lost Property

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
