Notes/Reminders

Sports Day 2023

Sports Day will be held on the morning of Friday 9th June. More details to follow. Children should wear a t-shirt in their house colour if possible. If you don’t know what that is, please contact the office.

Children are invited to design a program front cover in pencil on A5 paper to be handed to class teachers by Thursday 25th May. Designs must include “Cardinal Newman Sports Day 2023” and the date of “9th June”.

Community Service Award

Nominations for a Community Service Award are inivited. Has your child used their gifts and made a contribution to society? If they have done something amazing - perhaps as part of Girlguiding or Scouting for example - we would love to hear about it! Please email the office with details.

The Big Help Out - Thank you!

A big thank you to our sponsors Garsons who donated plants, seeds and compost for the Big Help out today. Also a huge thank you to those who volunteered and donated plants. Our flower beds look great again!

Diversity Celebration Day - Donations and volunteers needed!

On Friday 19th May, between 3.00 and 4.00pm we will celebrate diversity in our school by sharing finger foods from other countries.  Parents will be able to take their children to the hall after school to taste a variety of foods.

There will be tables with finger food from lots of countries.  We are fortunate to have such a wealth of diversity and it is lovely for the children to see their own cultures and favourite foods celebrated in school with their friends.

So far we have parents who will organise English, Polish, Irish and Italian foods.  Each table will need finger foods related to that country.   If groups get together to decide on one item to contribute each, there should be lots of food.  (Please list the ingredients of the food and remember that this is a NUT FREE school.

Please let Ms. Hunt know if you can organise and arrange with some other parents or friends to provide a range of finger foods from a country you are familiar with.   We would love the tables to reflect our school family.

School Dinners

Please remember to book school dinners on Scopay at least 1 day in advance or ring the school office before 9am if you have left it too late to book/cancel online for that day.

Allergies

If your child has an allergy please make sure the school office is informed. Please check the menu carefully before booking lunch for your child.

Eco Committee

Eco News

The Eco committee did fantastic work on finding out about fairtrade . We found simply loads of fairtrade produce in the supermarkets even apple juice! Please look out for the symbol.    As we thought though, we did find that fairtrade produce is slightly higher in price. Something to think about when next shopping. Our latest Energy spot check was not a great success, but we can't blame anyone for having lights on when the storm clouds were so dark outside. Roll on June!

Eco Tip!

We were thinking a lot about bees this week and how we can help them. This tip is a really simple one that looks fun to make at home.

Create a Bee Bath

Bees work up quite a thirst foraging and collecting nectar. Fill a shallow bird bath or bowl with clean water and arrange pebbles and stones inside so that they break the water’s surface. Bees will land on the stones and pebbles to take a long, refreshing drink.

iRock

Now your child can join iRock too!

At iRock we believe every child deserves an opportunity to express themselves! Our in-school rock and pop band lessons provide an amazing confidence-boosting experience for children by making music fun!

Weekly iRock lessons help to unleash your child's confidence: playing in their very own band, learning their favourite songs, leading up to live concerts.

No musical experience is necessary

iRock provide all of the instruments

Your child can choose from drums, keyboard, lead electric guitar, bass guitar or vocals

iRock lessons are held during the school day

Our experienced band coaches will guide the band through every lesson

iRock runs from Reception through to Year 6

Bands are grouped by age

Children choose their band name and learn their favourite songs

Rehearsals build towards a concert at the end of each term

Included in iRock is a brand new music qualification that children can achieve without needing to take an exam

Click here https://www.irockschool.com/enrol to visit our website, type in the name of your school and register interest for your child to join iRock.

Lost Property

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
