Dear Parents/Guardians,

News and Events

Please see our website here  for photos from all our recent events in school.  We are especially delighted to have taken part in football, cross-country and panathlon competitions against other schools this week, in addition to our regular sports clubs and training.  This term will also see lots of opportunities for our children to get involved in music festivals and in art workshops, so keep your eye on the website!  We are delighted that there are so many activities opening up again now - let’s make the most of them!

Crowning of Our Lady - Friday 6th May 2pm

Next Friday will be the first Friday in May - traditionally the time of year when we honour Mary as Mother of God and Queen of Heaven.  Year 4 will complete the crowning ceremony as usual, but this year with our new hall capacity, we have the opportunity to invite parents to join us for Mass and for the Crowning.

Traditionally the children bring flowers from their gardens to lay at Our Lady’s feet, but we would like to ask if possible that the Year 4 children this year might be able to bring a small bedding plant - these will then be planted in the flower pots around the grounds after the event so that we can enjoy them throughout Mary’s month of May and beyond!  Volunteers for a “planting party” after the event are warmly welcomed! Please contact me if you and your friends can spare a few minutes before the end of the school day on Friday 6th May.

Parent Survey

Please find below the link to our Parent Survey for Summer Term 2021-22.  We would love to hear your views about our school and about your children’s experience.  Do please be honest (the survey is anonymous), but if there is anything you are not happy with, do also speak to me or a member of the senior leadership team to let us know - we can’t act if we don’t know what the problem might be.  We will always try to help if we possibly can.  Equally, if you’re very happy with all the work our school team are doing, please do let us know and don’t assume someone else will - our school staff all work very hard and they would love to have your feedback on their work!  Thank you for responding to the survey which you can find here.

Science Day

On Thursday 23rd June, we will be holding a Science Fair all day - any parents who are scientists or who work for science-based companies who may be able to contribute to the day are invited to get in touch with Mr Carter (Science Lead) via the school office.  We have lots of exciting things going on that day, but would love to hear from others who can contribute.

Wishing all of you a lovely Bank Holiday weekend - let’s hope the sun is shining for us!

All the best

Catherine Burnham

Sport

ERPSSA Cross Country at Notre Dame

Last Saturday, our cross country team took part in the first cross country event to be held in 3 years.  We were absolutely astounded at how hard every member of the team pushed themselves on a particularly difficult track.  Well done to all those who took part, particularly the U9 and U10 Boys teams who placed 3rd overall in their events.  I would also like to thank all the parents who came to support and cheer on our teams-your enthusiasm and positivity helped everyone push through that last  stretch and gain those extra places!

Panathlon at Cleves

On Monday, we were fortunate to send a team to take part in the Panathlon Challenge at Cleves school.  This is a fantastic event for children of all abilities with a variety of tasks and challenges.  Ciaran, Caelan, Tom, Cillian, Enzo and Finley were fantastic ambassadors for our school and did us all proud with their teamwork and resilience.  Well done for your efforts, team!

Elmbridge Cricket Competition

On Monday afternoon, our school's cricket team for the Elmbridge Cricket Competition had their first official game. and have started off strongly.  Although we lost the first round, it was an incredibly close game (with the added challenge of a downpour of rain during the game!).  Our team will continue to train over the coming weeks with more competition games spread throughout the summer term.  Well done for your first game, team!

Report your child's absence

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures etc. Please either ring the school office and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. Thank you

Safeguarding

Keeping Safe: Home or out alone

Several of our children in Year 6 are now walking to and from school with parental permission on their own or with friends. This is a great way for them to increase their independence in preparation for secondary school and it is a parental decision. The NSPCC has some guidance to support parents with deciding when their child is ready to be out alone. If you make the decision for your child to walk home alone without an adult then please can you inform us via the school office. Children without written permission will not be allowed to leave school without an adult.

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
