22nd  July, 2022

Dear Parents

Thank you for all your support for our children and staff this year!  Our community of learners, believers and friends has really flourished with the range of opportunities open to us once again!  Our children in both key stages have represented the school in music and in sports against other schools and we have enjoyed a wealth of performances in school, from the tear-jerking YR Welcome Assembly to the wonderful Y6 Leavers' Production of Treasure Island.  Our children have been able to travel again, to Dorset, to High Ashurst and indeed to France and some of our younger children have had the opportunity to travel by train, to visit farms, fire stations and wildlife centres...  We are thrilled to be able to give them these opportunities together once again.

As usual, our school has achieved excellent academic results across the board from Reception to Year 6 this summer and we are justifiably proud of our children's progress.  However, we are most proud of our children's spiritual and emotional development and they reflected in collective worship this morning on their own service to our school community this academic year.  Each one has contributed to the rich rainbow of gifts and talents which makes up our school community and we treasure each and every contribution.  Well done to all our wonderful children!

We have also celebrated the contribution of our staff team this morning and I know that parents have been very generous in their thanks and support for staff working with your children this academic year.  Please allow me to pass on their thanks and appreciation for your generosity and kind words.

As this academic year draws to a close, we wish our leavers - staff and pupils - all the very best as they journey on to pastures new and we look forward to seeing all our returning families on Wednesday 7th September.

We wish all of you a wonderful summer and safe (and disruption-free!) travels.

God Bless

Catherine Burnham

Headteacher

Surrey Cricket Tickets

Over the summer holidays, Surrey Cricket Foundation are hosting a Communities Day at The Kia Oval. This is taking place on 19th August and is centred around a One Day cricket game between Surrey Men and Gloucestershire.

We have got around 2000 free tickets to give away to children from Surrey schools.

This is a really great way for the children to enjoy a day out at the cricket over their summer holidays and as well as getting involved in the plenty of activities that will be going on at the Oval throughout the day.

Tickets can be accessed using the link below:

Earrings

If you are planning for your child to have their ears pierced over the summer holidays, please make it as early in the holiday as possible.  Children are not able to do PE in school if they cannot remove their earrings.  If worn for school, earrings should only be small studs, one in each ear.  Thank you for your support with this.

Uniform

In September, Summer uniform may be worn during the summer term and in the first autumn half term.  Smart black school shoes should be worn and hair accessories should be in school colours (Navy, red or white).  Our children always look very smart in their uniform – thank you for helping them to maintain this.

First Holy Communion:

Congratulations to all the children who recently received their First Holy Communion. Please send a photo to the school office so we can add it to our display.

Library Reading Summer Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries, encourages children aged from 4 to 11 to continue reading throughout the summer holidays. The aim of the Challenge is to read up to six books, collecting special stickers and rewards along the way. Children will need to be a member of the library to sign up for the challenge but joining the library does not take long and is free. All reading counts including audiobooks, eBooks and eComics! More information can be found on the library website.

Parents Association Notes

It would be great to know who the new rep teams for next year are going to be so that this year's reps can hand over the ropes and ensure that September gets off to a smooth start.

If there are at least 2 reps from each class, the burden is minimal.   It is not just a role for SAHM/Ds.  If you haven't yet taken your turn, and want to know a little bit more (in terms of hours per month, jobs, etc) please do DM your current reps and we would be help.

The PA bank account has been put to good use paying for seating & new books which is great however, the only way we can continue supplementing great projects like these is with the events which the PA run with the help of the Reps.

Thank you to those who have already come forward, and thanks in advance to those who are keen to find out more and volunteer.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
