23rd September, 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please find below news, upcoming events etc. for the week.

Have a lovely weekend

Notes/Reminders

Cardinal Newman Art Exhibition

All of our children (Y1 - Y6 and current Y7) have their work exhibited in a public gallery this weekend!  Please take them along to view their work professionally displayed - for most of them this is a once in a lifetime experience!  I was down there at lunchtime on Thursday and members of the public were most impressed with the work on display!

The gallery is the Riverhouse Barn in Walton and opening hours are 10 - 4 on Saturday and Sunday.

Mrs Fleming and the team have worked extremely hard to put this together for the children.  Please do take your child along to find their picture!

Early Years Playground

From Thursday next week, we will have works starting on our Reception playground.  Children will not be able to access the Reception and Y1 classrooms from the playground and will enter school via the KS1 playground main door.  Reception will have regular access to outside space away from their classroom until the works are complete.

Children in KS2 should come into school from the other side of the hall - the exit gate by the Y5 classrooms - until the works are finished.

We hope work will be complete by October half-term.  Many thanks for your support with this.

Family Mass

Thank you to all of you that attended the school mass last Sunday. It was lovely to see all the Holy Communion children together.

Open Evening – Wednesday 28th September 5-7pm

No need to book.

We are holding our first ever open evening to encourage prospective Reception parents to visit our fantastic school.  We have always been an over-subscribed school, but with falling birth rates in Elmbridge, it is important that we maintain our strong pupil numbers through the next few years.

There is sometimes a perception that Cardinal Newman is only for Catholic children – we know that this is not the case and there are many in our community of different faiths or none.  Our oversubscription criteria will continue to give children from our parishes the first priority, but it is important for us to share the message that we welcome children of all faiths or none at Cardinal Newman.

Reception classes - tissue donations

Please can Reception children if possible, bring boxes of tissues to school. These will be used throughout the school. They can also be dropped at the school office. Thank you

Reception Welcome Assembly

Please note the Reception Welcome Assembly and Partners in Learning presentation will take place at 8.50 am on Friday 30th September. There will be refreshments afterwards, finish will be approx 10 am.

Flu Vaccine

The letter from Children and Family Health Surrey regarding the nasal flu immunisation was emailed out on 12th Sept.  This will be taking place at school on Wednesday 2nd November. If you would like your child to have this, then you need to follow the link in the letter and give consent by 4pm on 26th October.

Sundries on Scopay

Can we kindly ask parents if you are able to, please pay the £5 voluntary Sundries contribution on Scopay. This is used for baking supplies etc. These contributions are much appreciated, thank you.

School Dinners

Please remember to book school dinners at least 1 week in advance or ring the school office before 9 am if you have left it too late to book online for that day.

Lost Property

There is a large amount of lost property in the red lost property box on the KS1 playground. Please have a look through it as it will be disposed of if unclaimed.

Winter uniform

From the week beginning 3rd October, all children are asked to wear smart winter uniform until the end of the Spring Term.  Please support our smart uniform policy by ensuring hair accessories are school colours (red, white or navy blue) and that children are not wearing wristbands/nail polish etc during school time.  School shoes should be smart black shoes (not trainers please!) – if you need any support with the purchase of items to support our uniform policy, please get in touch with Mrs. Burnham and we will do our best to support.

Bee-Lieve Foundation

We would like to invite your pupils to a fantastic afternoon of rugby-based fun and games to be held on Sunday 2nd October at London Irish training ground in Sunbury. The event will run from 12.30 - 3.30pm and young people from ages 4 - 18 are welcome to join us. To date, we have 33 children attending so have lots of spare places available.

The event is open to both boys and girls and will be run by the coaching team at London Irish. The London Irish club are keen to attract new players to join their welcoming sporting environment and are particularly keen to see girls aged 12-18 joining in the fun. London Irish Ladies (The Emeralds) run teams at several age groups. Their first XV have just enjoyed a fantastic season and currently play in the Women's Championship South Division 1.

Please see the attached flyer for more details. This will provide a great boost to both their physical and emotional wellbeing. Parents are welcome to attend and enjoy some refreshments whilst watching the fun unfold.

The best part...THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THIS EVENT. EVERYONE PLAYS AND JOINS IN FOR FREE!

Building Learning Power (BLP) Competition

Can you design a character for one of the 5 Learning Powers?

In school, we use Building Learning Power (BLP) to teach good learning strategies. There are four key learning powers – resilience, resourcefulness, reflectiveness and relationships, with the addition of risk taking.  We believe that it is important to equip and support our children to become good, happy and successful learners.

Competition:

We would like children to design characters to represent each of the learning powers at home. We would like these designs to be done on the computer.  (If you don’t have access to a computer, you can draw your character on paper.)  The winning designs for each character will be used throughout the school.

These are the characteristics of each learning power.

Resilience: not giving up,

Resourcefulness: being able to use a range of learning strategies and knowing what to do when you get stuck

Reflectiveness: being able to think about yourself as a learner and how you might be able to do this better

Relationships: being able to learn with and from others as well as on your own

Risk Taking: being able to have a go – you are ready and willing to try something new.

Closing date: Tuesday 27th September

We look forward to displaying our new learning power characters.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary, eg. homework issues, pick up arrangements, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know. For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Pick-up notes

If possible, please write pick-up notes in your child's reading/homework book or give them a note to pass onto the teacher.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible. If you email the office about a pick-up, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply but we will of course pass the message on. This is due to the large  volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily. Thank you for understanding.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
