Notes/Reminders

Sports Day

We are looking forward to sharing our children's sporting achievements with all of you on Sports Day on Friday 9th June.

Children will compete in their house colours and every child will have the opportunity to shine as they each participate in both novelty and running races through the morning.  Parents / grandparents / godparents and friends are warmly invited to join us and enjoy the fun!

Timings will be roughly the same as last year:

9am - approx 10:30am - Key Stage 2 Sports Day

10:45am - approx 12 noon - Reception and Key Stage 1 Sports Day

After Sports Day, children will return to their classrooms for afternoon register and packed lunches can be provided by the school kitchen for those who would like them.  Collection will be from the classroom doors like at the end of the day.

As usual, we will operate a soft release on Sports Day afternoon, so children will be free to go once Sports Day has completely finished; in previous years this has been warmly welcomed by families as an opportunity either to picnic in the park, to have an afternoon out or to make an early getaway for a weekend trip!  Staff will be in school as usual through the afternoon and any children who remain in school will be looked after until the end of the day.

Year 5 residential to High Ashurst

This week year 5 enjoyed their 2 night stay at High Ashurst, an outdoor education centre , located in near Box Hill. They participated in a variety of activities, ranging from the exhilaration of High Ropes (and the infamous leap of faith) to den building and teamwork games.  Blessed with warm, dry weather many of the year 5's experienced their first nights under canvas and the learning that results from sharing time with their friends, in the outdoors.  Many of the children surprised themselves and rose to the many challenges they were faced with, experiencing the satisfaction of climbing to the top of the climbing wall, or developing their leadership skills.

'At first I was nervous about the rock climbing, but conquering that fear I was proud of myself'

'On the High Ropes, I thought I couldn't do it, but I surprised myself by doing amazing'.

Well done all! For more photos see below.

Food Diversity afternoon

Thank you to everyone who made this event such a success.  Thank you to every single parent who went to so much trouble and took so much time to represent their countries in food.  Thank you too, to the parents and children who came along to celebrate the richness and diversity within our school community.  We had wonderful table displays and truly amazing food.  We had food from every continent, from Australia, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa and Asia.  The food was so good that many parents commented that their children had tasted food they never would have tasted otherwise.  A real compliment! For more photos see below.

Quad Kids Surrey

On Friday 19th May Melodie And Luma from Yr6 participated in a trial for a Quad Kids Surrey Team. The girls competed with pupils from seven other local schools.  The standards were extremely high and all pupils performed to their best ability. Well done to Luma who will be invited to represent Surrey at the final in June at Guildford Spectrum.

PE kits and Earrings

Over the half-term holiday, please take the time to review your child's school PE kit.  Trainers (in the right size!), school logo PE navy T-shirt and red PE shorts are all part of the compulsory uniform and should be in school at all times.  Cycling shorts (black / navy) may be worn under summer dresses / skirts but are not PE kit.

Please remember that the first week of the SUMMER holidays is the best time to get ears pierced if that's what you'd like to do - this avoids the need to miss 6 weeks of PE in school.  Children with pierced ears should be able to remove their earrings independently for school PE.  Thank you!

School Dinners

Please remember to book school dinners on Scopay at least 1 day in advance or ring the school office before 9am if you have left it too late to book/cancel online for that day.

Allergies

If your child has an allergy please make sure the school office is informed. Please check the menu carefully before booking lunch for your child.

Eco Committee

Eco - Committee

The Eco Committee are hard at work preparing for their whole school collective worship on the 12th of June. We are looking forward to sharing with the school all that we have been up to for the past two terms on our three topics.

  •  global citizenship,
  •  litter
  •  energy.

Please send in a picture of you or your family tackling one of these areas over half term. It would be great to see Cardinal Newman in eco action! It could be as simple as;

  • putting your litter in a recycling bin
  • turning lights or devices off
  • eating a fairtrade banana!

Please send to the office address. As we would like to show some of these photos on the Newsletter, only send in if you are okay for the photo to be shared. We can't wait to see your photos! Thank you.

Eco Tip

The weather looks like it might be warm and sunny for half term! This means picnic weather. Can you pack a picnic without using single-use plastic? Is a plastic free picnic even possible? Who will take on the challenge! Think about using reusable water bottles and containers, paper bags, and paper towels for wrapping!

Parents Association -  Registered Charity/Match Funding

Matched funding is a scheme whereby employers provide funding to charitable causes by “matching” the fundraising undertaken by their employees.  This could therefore have the potential to increase the takings at our school events many times over.   There are of course various schemes; the amounts donated range from approximately £250 to £1000+ per employee per event.

As the Parents’ Association is a registered charity (number 1147192), we are in a position to benefit from matched fundraising via your involvement, however big or small, at any of the school fundraising events.

If your employer offers a matched funding or giving scheme, please contact the PA via email pa@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk  so that we can ensure we would comply with their requirements.

Companies that have offered match-funding schemes include (this list is by no means exhausted):

Weekly iRock lessons help to unleash your child's confidence: playing in their very own band, learning their favourite songs, leading up to live concerts.

No musical experience is necessary

iRock provide all of the instruments

Your child can choose from drums, keyboard, lead electric guitar, bass guitar or vocals

iRock lessons are held during the school day

Our experienced band coaches will guide the band through every lesson

iRock runs from Reception through to Year 6

Bands are grouped by age

Children choose their band name and learn their favourite songs

Rehearsals build towards a concert at the end of each term

Included in iRock is a brand new music qualification that children can achieve without needing to take an exam

Click here https://www.irockschool.com/enrol to visit our website, type in the name of your school and register interest for your child to join iRock.

Lost Property

Please collect lost items from the lost property box in the KS1 playground.  Please label everything clearly so it can be returned to the owner. Please note it can take some time for items to reach the lost property box depending on where they were lost.

Items not claimed from the lost property box will be disposed of periodically as it quickly builds up. Thank you.

Communicating with your child's teacher

Messages for teachers can be put in your child's reading/homework diary/bookbag, eg. pick up arrangements, homework issues, lost property, requesting a meeting with the teacher or anything else you would like the teacher to know.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Absences should still be communicated via the office. (see below)

Pick-up notes

Please note that if someone other than a parent/carer is picking your child up, you need to let the teacher or the office know. Please put pick-up notes in your child's reading/ homework diary or bookbag.

For KS2 children, please remind your child to tell the teacher that the message is in there.

Children will not be released with someone else unless we have been notified of it.

If you do need to let the office know about a last minute pick-up change,  please do so before 2 pm if possible.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Y6 Independent Walkers

If your child is in Y6 and you would like to let us know they will be walking home from school independently, please email the office.

Y6 Mobile Phones

If Y6 children wish to bring their mobile phone to school, they just need to drop the phone at the school office before school and collect it after school.  Phones should be switched off please and not switched back on until children are off site.

No need to complete any form or email the office.

How to report your child being absent or sick

Please notify the school office every day your child is absent from school before 9 am so we can adjust dinner figures and complete the registers. Please either ring the school office on 01932 222536 and leave a voicemail or email absence@cardinalnewmanschool.co.uk. If you email us about an absence, you will not receive an acknowledgement reply due to the large volume of emails we receive in relation to this daily.

If your child has a stomach bug, they should not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of illness.

Absence Request

If you require a school absence for your child for some reason, please email the school office with the details.

eSafety and Safeguarding

Reminder: Keeping children safe online and in the real world

At Cardinal Newman School we are always reminding the children how they can keep themselves safe whether in the real world or in the virtual world. Class teachers regularly use the Zones of Regulation to assess how the children in their classes are feeling. Children are encouraged to share their worries using the ‘What I want my teacher to know boxes’ which are in each Key Stage 2 classrooms and the Worry Monsters which can be found in the Keys Stage 1 Classrooms.

Information to support parents can be found on the school website here.

Please continue to report any safeguarding concerns to Mr Flower (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Burnham (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
