Butterflies in Reception

For the past 4 weeks, Reception have been witnessing the life cycle of a butterfly. They watched how the eggs hatched into caterpillars, how the caterpillars made their cocoons and stayed in them for 5 days and now seeing the butterflies emerge from their cocoons. We have also named them in Red Class (Matilda and Mr Flower). This amazing experience has been thoroughly enjoyed by all and has encouraged the children to use their phonetic knowledge to write diaries, use their art skills to create beautiful paintings of the butterflies/caterpillars and use their scientific knowledge to understand how this life cycle happens and how it will begin again. We are saying goodbye to our butterflies today, but hopefully we may see them soon outside in the field or in our gardens.
