Religious Education

Religious Education is central to our curriculum and school life at Cardinal Newman. We encourage all children to engage with the deepest questions of life and faith.

The latest Catholic curriculum for RE is gradually being rolled out nationally.  At Cardinal Newman, we are teaching the new Religious Education Directory in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 using the resources and materials produced by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. Other year groups are currently continuing with the Come and See curriculum.  All year groups will be taught the new curriculum by September 2026 as the programme is rolled out. Learning in RE follows a spiral curriculum based on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus through scripture and in line with the liturgical year.  Assessment against the intended learning outcomes is ongoing and formally recorded termly.

Other world views are studied through one of the six curriculum branches called 'Dialogue and Encounter' where children have the opportunities to understand different faiths and perspectives. We also have a World Faiths Week which provides the opportunity for deeper learning in this area.

In line with the stipulation of the Bishop's Conference of England and Wales, the school spends 10% of the teaching week on Religious Education.
