Flourish

"God has created all things for good; all things for their greatest good; everything for its own good. What is the good of one is not the good of another; what makes one man happy would make another unhappy. God has determined, unless I interfere with His plan, that I should reach that which will be my greatest happiness. He looks on me individually, He calls me by my name, He knows what I can do, what I can best be, what is my greatest happiness, and He means to give it me.

― ST JOHN HENRY NEWMAN

PSHE-Flourish-RSE Curriculum Overview

Flourish lessons are timetabled for each week and they comprise of PSHE, RSE and Mental well-being.

PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education. It is an important part of your child's National Curriculum learning. At Cardinal Newman School we believe PSHE is a vital part of children’s education. It gives them the tools to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work. PSHE builds on the skills that pupils started to acquire during the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) to develop effective relationships, assume greater personal responsibility and manage personal safety, including online.

PSHE education became compulsory in all schools in September 2020.  We use a wide range of resources to teach PSHE at Cardinal Newman. We use Ten Ten Life to the Full Plus resources. These schemes of work allow us to cover a broad range of topics in a variety of ways. PSHE is taught in a range of ways and many elements of it are celebrated throughout different times of the academic year.

Some of the different areas that are of great focus at Cardinal Newman include;

  • Anti-Bullying
  • Road Safety
  • Railway Safety
  • Black History
  • First Aid
  • Chinese New Year
  • Celebrating Differences
  • Children’s Mental Health
  • Online safety
  • Money

Most of these areas are covered during a whole school focus during a specific week or day during the year. This allows children to explore different areas of life to give them key skills they need to grow. We want our children to be able to carry out our mission of being a community of Learners Believers and Friends rooted in the values and the teachings of the Gospel.

The Relationships and Sex Education programme we follow is called Life to the Full, from Ten Ten Resources. This is a Catholic approved programme which covers most of the Relationships and Health Education in our school. The Life to the Full programme is based on the structure of ‘A Model Catholic RSE Curriculum’ by the Catholic Education Service. This model curriculum was highlighted as a work of good practice by the Department of Education so we therefore have confidence that the programme will be fit for purpose in supporting the growth and development of your child.

Life to the Full is much more than a series of lessons. It is an entire platform of creative resources that will engage, inform and inspire our children and, indeed, you as parents. This includes interactive video content, story-based activities, employing a wide range of teaching tools, original worship music and an accompanying programme of classroom prayers.
